The Canadian government is poised to finalize a federal dental care program to subsidize dental care for residents who cannot afford it. As the Canadian legislature vets the proposed program, reformists hope that the program will also make provisions for preventive dental care. The age group is 12 and under as of now.

Preventive dental care helps maintain good oral hygiene rather than waiting for impending oral diseases to materialize. The habit protects oral and overall health. Researchers have linked poor oral hygiene to diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, and adverse pregnancy outcomes, which impact public health.

If approved, the program will roll out by 2025. By incorporating preventive dental care, beneficiaries will have easy access to dental hygienists - the professionals who perform preventive dental hygiene services.

Fluoride Treatments Prevent and Reverse Tooth Decay

A general dentist in Niagara Falls, Ontario, James Frizzell DDS has nearly three decades of experience providing preventive and cosmetic dental services for patients of all ages. At routine dental checkups at the Niagara Falls office, James Frizzell DDS helps patients prevent cavities and tooth decay by applying fluoride.

Eating and drinking create bacteria and sugar in the mouth, which attack tooth enamel and contribute to demineralization. Additionally, each day remineralization occurs as food and water redeposit minerals such as fluoride, phosphate, and calcium to tooth enamel. When more demineralization than remineralization occurs, a patient experiences tooth decay.

Fluoride applications at the dentist can reverse early decay and increase a tooth’s resistance to acid from sugar and bacteria. Available as a varnish or gel, this treatment contains a substantially higher level of fluoride than toothpaste. After sitting on the teeth for several minutes, the patient will rinse their mouth. Fluoride applications are particularly vital for children aged six months to 16 years, when permanent teeth are coming in, and adults with conditions such as gum disease or chronic cavities.
