Due to the shape of the molars, brushing and flossing may not be enough to prevent cavities. Sealants add a smooth layer of material over the molars and serve as a protective measure against cavities. When combined with regular brushing, sealants can reduce the risk of cavities by 80 percent the first two years after treatment and by 50 percent over the following two years.
Applying sealant is a fast and painless procedure. After cleaning and preparing the teeth, the dentist will apply a thin coating over the back molars. This makes it more difficult for food particles and bacteria to accumulate in the teeth’s crevices. While dentists recommend sealants for children with emerging molars, adults can also elect to have this procedure. Sealants can last for up to four years. While they can become loose, they are easy to replace.
